Initial Applications through UCAS Conservatoires

To begin the application process you must first apply through UCAS Conservatoires. This application should include full details of your previous education, qualifications and experience.

Please note: the application deadlines shown on the UCAS Conservatoires website do not necessarily apply. Please refer to the deadlines in the programme information below for your chosen programme.

References

For undergraduate programmes, p lease submit your application without your outstanding references by ticking the option that you will download the offline reference forms. Just enter the names and contact details of your referees. You can then mark the section as complete.

Your referees do not need to send us your references; we will contact them, if necessary.

For postgraduate programmes, two references are required (one practical/professional and one academic). Your referees should be familiar with your work and be able to comment on your suitability for the programme of your choice and your ability to work at the appropriate academic level.

The Personal Statement

Your Personal Statement should address:

• your background and relevant experience;
• your reasons for applying to Trinity Laban; and
• a rationale for your choice of programme (for each programme if you are applying for more than one) including:
  – the relevance of the programme to your current practice and future professional aspirations; and
  – why you are interested in the programme at this point in your educational / personal / career / professional development.

BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance

To apply for this course you must first submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires.

Academic Requirements

You will normally have two A Levels at Grade E or above. For overseas candidates: Equivalent qualifications, such as High School Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Abitur and Gymnasium, are recognised. Alternatives may be considered.

English language requirements (if applicable): IELTS (General or Academic) minimum 5.5 in all four areas; or B2 First (Cambridge English) minimum 160 in all four areas; or Trinity College London – Integrated Skills in English level II or above.

If you require a Student visa to study in the UK you may require a Secure English Language Test (SELT). More information can be found at gov.uk.

Financial Awards

Please note that some financial awards are available for BACD students. You will be automatically considered for those awards as part of your audition; there is no separate application process. If you have been granted a financial award, we will contact you via email to notify you. All undergraduate students with Home fees and a residual household income of up to £30,000 qualify for financial assistance under the Trinity Laban Undergraduate Bursary Scheme. Students who have been granted a Student Loan will receive an annual cash bursary of £1,250 for the duration of their undergraduate programme.

BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance with Foundation Year

To apply for this course you must first submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires.

Normally, applicants to the Foundation Programme will be 17+ and have the following dance and academic profile:

Dance Experience

• Practical dance experience of one dance form is expected (e.g. contemporary dance, classical ballet, urban dance), assessed at audition: candidates will be expected to demonstrate technical expertise and potential, and imaginative responses to creative tasks set; commitment and potential to study dance at a professional level; and enthusiasm for the physical demands of intensive dance training.

Academic

• 5 GCSEs (including English Language), grades A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs) or a combination of 2/3 GCSEs (including English Language), grades A*-C / or 9-4 (in 2017 GCSEs), plus a BTEC First Diploma (Level 2)
• Advanced GCE (A-level) or an AS GCE (AS-level) or equivalent, including level 3 Graded and Vocational Graded qualifications in Dance on the NQF/RQF (allocated points on the UCAS tariff): e.g. level 3 qualifications of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD); Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), or: BTEC National Diploma: Dance or a named Dance or Performing Arts pathway, or: combinations of the above level 3 qualifications
• Equivalent qualifications and/or relevant prior experience will be considered.

Language requirements: Normally the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) B2 (IELTS 5.5 min in all areas).

BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance with International Foundation Year

To apply for this course you must first submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires.

Normally, applicants to the International Foundation Year will have the following dance and academic profile:

Dance Experience

• Practical dance experience of one dance form is expected (e.g. contemporary dance, classical ballet, urban dance), assessed at audition: applicants will be expected to demonstrate technical expertise and potential, and imaginative responses to creative tasks set; commitment and potential to study dance at a professional level; and enthusiasm for the physical demands of intensive dance training.

Academic

• An A-level or AS-level, or equivalent qualifications. Relevant prior experience will be considered.

English language requirements: You must meet a minimum of CEFR B1 (IELTS 4.5 min in all areas). You will be required to take an IELTS for UKVI English Language test.

BSc (Hons) Dance Science

The on-time UCAS Conservatoire deadline for dance undergraduate applications for entry in September 2024 is 31 January 2024 however late applications will be considered.

To apply for this course you must first submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires. Early application is recommended as there are limited places available and auditions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points.
• An interest in Dance Science, normally demonstrated by an A-Level or equivalent in Maths, Science, Physical Education or Psychology (but not essentially so).
• Applicants without the recommended academic subjects at A-level are encouraged to apply if they have any of these subjects at GCSE (9-5).
• All applicants will be interviewed and some applicants may be asked to complete a dance science workbook with specific reading and guidance to assess their aptitude for the programme.

• Some prior dance experience is essential and will be assessed through your personal statement.

Applicants will normally have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE. However, mature individuals with professional experience may also apply.

In addition, we accept a wide range of national and international qualifications using equivalencies from UCAS and UK NARIC. If you have any questions about your qualifications please contact admissions@trinitylaban.ac.uk.

English language requirements

Applicants for whom English is not their first language should demonstrate proficiency in English equivalent to IELTS 5.5 in all areas.

There will be an interview required as part of the application process either face-to-face or by Skype. Applicants will be contacted accordingly.

Study Abroad Programme

You must currently be studying on an undergraduate programme overseas and aiming to achieve credits from your studies at Trinity Laban. You will need to show strong motivation and demonstrate in your application how the programme will support your personal and professional development.

Submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires and upload online materials on Embark. You will be contacted once your UCAS Conservatoires application has been received.

Academic Requirements

English Language requirements (if applicable): IELTS (General or Academic Training) minimum 5.5 in all four areas; or B2 First (Cambridge English) minimum 162 in all four areas; or Trinity College London – Integrated Skills in English level II or above.

If you require a Student visa to study in the UK, you may need a Secure English Language Test (SELT). More information can be found at gov.uk.

Please note the on-time deadline for applicants applying to study for one term or for a whole academic year is 25 January. We will accept applications after that date but we would recommend you apply as early as possible, as places are limited.

General Requirements

Applicants are expected to have an appropriate undergraduate degree (or an equivalent qualification) or 5-years professional experience in a relevant discipline.

Firstly, please submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires and upload online materials on Embark, details by programme below.

Selection is by scrutiny of the applicant’s written application, and additional portfolio/video/other evidence.

You may be also be asked to attend an interview as part of your application/s.

We look forward to receiving your formal application as close to January 2024 as possible for September 2024 entry. Applications received after January will still be considered.

In addition, meeting external requirements of UK Visas and Immigration is essential.

English Language requirements

MA and MFA Dance Leadership and Community Practice

You should upload or provide online links to your work. These could include:

• Video document(s) showing you dancing material from a dance/movement class (this can be in any movement genre) or doing a movement practice. This is so the panel can see you in an embodied practice and your potential to be communicative through moving and engage others in moving. Can be filmed in any space available to you. (Guideline for length: around 10-12 minutes);
• Footage of movement improvisation with some information of the basis or inspiration for the improvisation. (guideline for length: 2-4 minutes);
• Footage of you teaching dance, or facilitating a workshop in a community/educational setting. (Please ensure you have the consent of any other people/participants – including musicians and other professionals – who appear in the footage to film and share the footage. Trinity Laban agrees only to view/share the filmed material amongst individuals on the Admissions Panel and purely for the purposes of considering your application to the Programme).

Videos can have a verbal introduction so you can introduce yourself and explain the content.

Applicants are normally expected to have a first degree (or an equivalent qualification) in a relevant subject and/or relevant (professional) experience, preferably in dance, education or community-related work.

Additional requirements for MFA

Applicants should upload a proposal, outlining:

• the reasons you wish to carry out an independent project over a full academic year;
• your suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA DLCP; and
• the nature of your intended research and a draft project timeline with indicated research outputs (which is understandably subject to change).

Shortlisted applicants to the MFA will also be invited to undertake an online discussion.

When you apply through UCAS Conservatoires, please use Conservatoire Code T75. The Programme Codes are:

• MA Dance Leadership & Community Practice over one year, full time: 601F
• MA Dance Leadership & Community Practice over two years, part time: C600
• MFA Dance Leadership & Community Practice over two years, full time: 600M

MA and MFA Choreography

You should upload or provide an online link to choreographed work that you have created. It should be between 12 -15 minutes in length, and include:

• an excerpt of a solo;
• an excerpt of a group work; and
• an excerpt of a rehearsal, workshop or class in which you are an active participant.

You should also include:

• a comment on the material presented, and on the process for its creation/devising/realization; and
• a comment on some of the artistic problems you encountered, and how you went about solving them.

Additional requirements for MFA

Applicants should upload a proposal, outlining:

• the reasons you wish to carry out an independent project over a full academic year;
• your suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Choreography; and
• the nature of your intended research and a draft project timeline with indicated research outputs (which is understandably subject to change).

Applicants to the MFA will also be required to undertake an interview (if not in person, an online interview can be arranged).

When you apply through UCAS Conservatoires, please use Conservatoire Code T75. The Programme Codes are:

• MA Choreography, full time: 700F
• MA Choreography, part time: C700
• MFA Choreography, full time: 700M

MA and MFA Creative Practice

If your practice is in dance/dance theatre

You should upload or provide an online link to choreographed work that you have created. It should be between 12 -15 minutes in length, and include:

• an excerpt of a solo;
• an excerpt of a group work;
• an excerpt of a rehearsal, workshop or class in which you are an active participant.

You should also include:

• a comment on the material presented, and on the process for its creation/devising/realization; and
• a comment on some of the artistic problems you encountered, and how you went about solving them.

If your practice is in an other art form

You should upload or provide an online link to:

• material evidence of your dance/movement ability; and
• substantial evidence of current artistic practice (such as design portfolio, scripts, evidence of theatre direction, acting involvement, etc.). The visual material must be accompanied by explanatory notes that set the context of the material.

Additional requirements for MFA

Applicants should upload a proposal, outlining:

• the reasons you wish to carry out an independent project over a full academic year;
• your suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Creative Practice; and
• the nature of your intended research and a draft project timeline with indicated research outputs (which is understandably subject to change).

Applicants to the MFA will also be required to undertake an interview (if not in person an online interview can be arranged).

When you apply through UCAS Conservatoires, please use Conservatoire Code T75. The Programme Codes are:

• MA Creative Practice: Transdisciplinary/Dance professional pathways, full time: 701F
• MA Creative Practice: Transdisciplinary/Dance Professional pathways, part time: 701P
• MFA Creative Practice: Transdisciplinary/Dance Professional pathways, full time: 802F

MA and MFA Dance Performance

These programmes are suited to both recent graduates and to more experienced performers who wish to refresh and reframe their performance practice alongside gaining a postgraduate qualification. You will need to demonstrate a level of dance performance practice, either at an audition workshop or through video application, that is commensurate with study at Masters level.

Please submit an application via UCAS Conservatoires in the first instance, to receive more information about how to submit your recorded material.

You can submit your recorded material via Embark. Please upload the following material:

1) Showreel/portfolio of work, maximum 5 minutes. This could be footage of you performing, working in the studio, outside, etc. You should be clearly visible in the video. It would be useful to think about how your choice of footage represents your work as a dance artist/performer.

2) Solo task: take a look at this famous solo created and performed by Trisha Brown in 1978.

Your task is to film yourself dancing a 60 second response. You are not expected to learn or reproduce any of the material, instead we are asking you to choreograph a new solo or simply to improvise freely for 60 seconds, working with movement ideas from the film. Here are some things you might want to think about, but feel free to use your own ideas:

• Taking impulses/directional change from different parts of the body
• Moving in and out of pedestrian and more complex movement vocabulary
• Finding a play between physical clarity and freedom/fluidity

Your solo might look very different to the one on film, and that’s okay!

3) A recording of you speaking to camera explaining why you want to apply for this programme and telling us about your choice-making in the solo task. This should be maximum 2-mins.

4) If your video application is successful, you will be invited to an online interview with the Programme Leader.

Additional requirements for MFA

Applicants should upload (to Embark) a proposal, outlining:

• The reasons they wish to carry out an independent project over one academic year (their second year of study)
  • Their suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Dance Performance
  • The nature of their intended research and a draft projected timeline with indicated outputs of research (which can be subject to change)

When you apply through UCAS Conservatoires, please use Conservatoire Code T75. The Programme Code is 704F for MFA (two years) and 705F for MA Dance Performance (one year).

MSc and MFA Dance Science

Applicants are expected to have practical dance experience (in any dance style) and the UCAS Conservatoires application should evidence this. In addition, your application should include a brief commentary on your motivations to study Dance Science with reference to any particular areas you are currently interested in and your future goals.

In addition, you will be asked to submit a Comprehensive Personal Statement which consists of two parts.

In Part One you should include a brief commentary (which can be based on our UCAS Conservatoires application statement) on:

• the reasons to study Dance Science and its value for the dance artist and dance practice
• any previous experience on research or other activities relevant to dance science
• the particular areas of Dance Science in which you are currently interested, i.e. what you are interested in exploring more while on the Programme and why.

In Part Two you are asked to choose and answer to three questions of a list of Dance Science related topics. The word count for this part is circa 900 words (approximately 300 words per question, not inclusive of the reference list).

Detailed guidance for this task will be sent to you upon receipt of your UCAS Conservatoire application.

Additional requirements for MFA

In addition to the brief commentary submitted in UCAS Conservatoires application, applicants should upload a proposal, outlining:

• the reasons you wish to carry out an independent project over a full academic year;
• your suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Dance Science;
• the nature of your intended research and a clear research question you would like to investigate;
• a draft project timeline with potential research outputs (which is understandably subject to change).

Applicants to the MFA will also be required to undertake an interview (if not in person, online interviews can be arranged).

When you apply through UCAS Conservatoires, please use Conservatoire Code T75. The Programme Codes are:

• MSc Dance Science, full time: 801F
• MSc Dance Science, part time: 804P
• MFA Dance Science, full time: 500M

Specialist Diploma in Choreological Studies

Application for this programme is via Embark (not UCAS Conservatoires)

Selection is by scrutiny of the applicant’s application which should be provided by uploading the following:

• A current CV and copies of relevant qualifications
• A personal statement including your background in Choreological Studies and your reasons for wishing to study on this programme
• A recent headshot (passport photos are fine)
• Details of any English language qualifications if English is not your first language

Entry Requirements

You will have prior knowledge of Laban Studies or Choreological Studies, or a practice-based BA (Hons) in movement or dance studies with a movement analysis component, or a Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies (LIMS) qualification or equivalent professional experience.

English Language requirements

IELTS Band 6 (General English Test) or above (or equivalents). Certificates will need to be provided in order for your application to be fully considered. If the panel feel that there is a lack of English Language proficiency or understanding of a subject area, then you may be asked to supply additional written material.
